Angelina Expo History

Built in 1983, the George H. Henderson, Jr. Exposition Center complex was constructed for $2 million and funded from private contributions. It is located on a 36 acre tract (only 25 acres are in use at the present). When constructed it was the largest pre-engineered clear span building in the United States! It has been copied by many cities since its completion.

Since its construction the Expo has continued to grow, adding additional parking for a total room of 3,500 vehicles, twelve industrial size overhead fans in our arena and a 62,500 sq. ft. open air pavilion with a 100'x150' arena. Also new to the complex, a state of the art digital sign sits on our front lawn facing the loop. The high-traffic area now has access to upcoming event information. With all of our updates and amenities, we have been able to serve the community and host events that continue to grow each year.

According to past-director Charles Arnold, the first events held at the facility were in spring of 1983 while construction was still underway. The first event was in February, a Havard Horse Sale in March, and the Angelina County Benefit Rodeo in April of 1983.
